Arena Shooter Mechanics
Overview
This project has it’s main focuses on the player mechanics. Specifically the focus is on player movement mechanics and combat to which directly correlates to the genre of it being an arena shooter.
Character Movement
The character has identical movement to most FPS games using WASD to walk around normally. Similar to other FPS games you can also sprint and crouch. The more in depth movement comes when combining your movement inputs. You can sprint and crouch to slide as well as jump and sprint to dash in the air.
Other mechanics which are independent to these are grappling to an object and swinging forward with the ability to detach this as well. Another mechanics without any is mantling a ledge which can be done on any ledge which is close enough to the character and they are facing the direction of the ledge.
Weapon Mechanics
Within the game I created 2 weapons which are hit scan weapons. They can be picked up off the ground by interacting with them. The player has 2 weapons slots which they can changed between. Each weapons has a magazine with a limited size therefore needing to be reloaded after all the shots in the weapon have been fired. All weapons currently can be Aimed down sights which will increase the accuracy of the weapon you are aiming to have no random spread, where as firing from the hip will have an accuracy cone. The Assault rifle can be fires fully automatically where as the pistol in the game is semi-automatic.
Abilities
The two movement abilities are given cooldown times so they can’t be spammed or constantly used out of control. limiting the speed of the player.
User Interface
Different elements of the game such as the abilities, the timer and information about the target course needed to be shown to the player. Therefore I made different UI elements to place on the player screen to show this information along with the regular player HUD for weapons.
The Map
The map I created is simple and not meshed but the purpose is to make the player used their different abilities to choose how they want to move through the course with some abilities being more beneficial then others in some sections of it.
